Who am I?

I’ve often posed this question of myself. It is one that we all consider in one form or another. Who am I, what am I, why am I, etc.?

There are many answers to this question, but only one, I believe, is completely true. Let us examine me in this consideration.

Who am I? Let’s establish the baseline. My name is Ben. I could tell you my life story for further context, but for the sake of answering the broader question of who I am, let’s come back to this one.

What am I? I am business owner. I am a mechanical engineer, specializing in carbon fiber. I am an artist, with interest in painting, photography, and ceramics. I am a carpenter. I love skiing and music, and play the flute and piccolo. A bit of a jack of all trades. And yet, none of these interests or talent I would say define me, or answer the question of who I am.

Why am I? Here we start to get more to the heart of the question of who I am. Why am I here? Why are any of us here? We could cite selfless responses, such as helping others, or providing a better world for our family and our descendants, or selfish responses, such as accumulating wealth. The real answer I believe, is far better, and to explain it, let me tell you a story.

Before there was anything, God made all things, and set all creation under the stewardship of humanity. But then we broke our right standing with God and violated His trust. That is why we seek greater purpose. Why we must know who and why we are. God made us and God alone is the solution to the formula of our hearts.

The good news is that, while we are fallen and broken people, there is still hope. God left us a way out through the person of Jesus, His son. He came to earth as a man to take our failures, our sins, and our punishment upon Himself and die for us. He is the perfect sacrifice that restores us to right standing with God. And as such, we are called to live our lives for Him, and those around us.

So, when you ask who I am, there is one response. I am a child of God, redeemed by the Son, dedicated to serving others are growing closer to God.
